• When a taxpayer has a federal or state balance due, they may specify that it should be paid by a direct withdrawal from their bank account.
  • Payment information is entered on the E-file section, in the Bank Account page – see page 123 for details, including how to give the taxpayer a printed record of the direct debit information.
    • Note: Direct debit information is not included in any form available as part of a print set. To give the taxpayer a printed page with their direct debit information on it, you must print the client summary page. That’s available as part of a PDF:
      • In the Quality Review print set, at the beginning.
      • From within the return, by clicking “Preview Return” at the top of the screen, then “Print your 2023 Tax Return”. (The third page is the client summary)
  • Warning: TaxSlayer may still print a 1040-V, Payment Voucher, as part of the copy of the tax return for the taxpayer. If it does print this form, do not give to the taxpayer.
  • The taxpayer can revoke (cancel) their federal direct debit payment by contacting the U.S. Treasury Financial Agent at 888-353-4537, an automated system. However, the call must be made no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
    • Note for CA state returns: A scheduled direct debit payment on an e-filed California state tax return can be cancelled; follow the instructions on CA Form 8455.
  • Returns (regular and amended) e-filed after the regular filing deadline: for these returns, IRS computers are programmed to do a direct debit immediately upon processing the return.
    • Warning: this happens even if the filing deadline for the taxpayer has been extended due to a federally-declared emergency.
